A 7th grader from the Academies of Discovery defeated 40 opponents to win the 2020 Hall County Spelling Bee on Friday, Jan. 31.

Jane Cantrell correctly spelled the words "piratical" and "hurriedly" to wrap up 15 rounds of spelling in the annual competition.

The runner-up in Friday's bee was Paul Adams, a 5th grader from Spout Springs Elementary School.

Both Cantrell and Adams will represent Hall County in the upcoming district bee. Third-place finisher Claire Bussler, an 8th grader from North Hall Middle School, is the alternate for the district competition.

The 2020 Hall County School District Spelling Bee was held at Lanier Charter Career Academy in Oakwood. The contest lasted nearly three hours and featured spellers from eight middle schools and 18 elementary schools in Hall County.
