Boys basketball: Johnson snaps long region losing streak; Lumpkin, White win; Jefferson loses

BETHLEHEM — The Johnson boys snapped a long region losing streak on the road Tuesday.
 
The Knights used a big second half to rally for a 43-33 win over Apalachee in Region 8-5A play.
 
It was Johnson’s first region win since beating Clarke Central on January 31, 2017, also in Region 8-5A.
 
Johnson (3-4, 1-2 Region 8-5A) fell behind 13-8 after the first quarter and tailed 21-16 at halftime. But the defense clamped down on the Wildcats (1-4, 0-1 Region 8-5A) the rest of the way.
 
The Knights outscored Apalachee 11-2 in the third quarter to take a 27-23 lead and then pulled away in the fourth quarter.
 
Jackson Vandiver paced Johnson with 14 points, 12 coming in the first half to keep the Knights close. Wade Pearce added 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers and 10 points after halftime to spark the comeback.
 
Jose Cabrera had 7 points, Dayshun Summerour had 6 points, all in the fourth quarter, and Scott Odum chipped in with 4, including a pair of game-sealing free throws.
 
Apalachee was led by Chase Red with 17 points.
 
Johnson next will play host to Loganville on Friday in Region 8-5A action.


LUMPKIN COUNTY 72,
CHESTATEE 45

 
The Indians jumped out to a big first-quarter lead en route to a non-region win at home.
 
Lumpkin County (4-2) led 21-7 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 40-21 by halftime. The Indians blew the game open outscoring Chestatee 27-13 in the third quarter for a 67-34 advantage.
 
Jones Harris led Lumpkin with a career-high 31 points in just three quarters of work. Chandler Pulley added 11 points, 6 steals, and 4 assists. Gus Faulkner scored 11 points for the Indians.
 
Chestatee was led by Ethan Popham and Peyton Phillips with 11 points apiece.
 
Lumpkin County is back in action on Friday playing host to North Hall in a Region 7-3A battle.

The War Eagles (1-5) next will travel to East Hall on Friday in a Region 8-4A showdown.


WHITE COUNTY 65, 
NORTH HALL 54

Jadon Yeh scored 21 points and Silas Mulligan had 18 to lead the Warriors (5-4, 2-0 Region 7-3A) past North Hall (3-4, 1-2 Region 7-3A) on Tuesday at home. 


CEDAR SHOALS 62, 
JEFFERSON 42

Romaine Harriott scored 12 points to lead the Dragons (3-3, 0-1 Region 8-4A) in the loss to Cedar Shoals on Tuesday at home.

Spencer Darby added 11.
