Oakwood City Council approves rezoning, special use for extended stay hotel

The Oakwood City Council voted 3-2 Monday on the rezoning and special use application for a developer wanting to build an extended stay hotel on Mundy Mill Drive.

But, the approval did not come without terms.

"There was a condition that the use be specific to the hotel and brand there, and our code requires that rezoning of that use to also receive a conditional use or special use from city council," said City Manager B.R. White. "City council approved that also, with the same condition that as long as it's a Candlewood Suites and the brand is there, then the use can stay there."

Councilwoman Sherri Millwood made the motion to approve with the condition. The condition stated that if the Candlewood branding was to go away for some reason, the conditional use approval would also be revoked.

White said the branding was important because different types of extended stay hotels attracted different clientele. "The belief on this one is it will bring a little bit higher clientele that would stay since we have a lot of corporate visitors to the city."

The parcels in question are 3761, 3765, 3769, 3775 and 3783 Mundy Mill Drive, near Oakwood Road. The parcels are behind and catty-corner to the Best Western hotel. It was zoned residential.

Council members Stephen Hendrix and Dwight Wood cast the no votes to both actions.
