Rising COVID-19 cases in Banks County also are impacting youth sports programs.
Beginning Dec. 19, the county will halt gym play and will not schedule basketball practices through Jan. 2, 2021.
“We fully intend on making sure our Little Leopards are able to have their basketball season,” said Banks County Parks and Recreation Director Brooke Whitmire. “As recreation professionals, we know how important youth sports and activities are to our little ones. However, a large part of being a recreation professional includes, first and foremost, facilitating a safe and fun experience for all.”
The 5/6 season will conclude Thursday as scheduled, while the remaining 7-14 practices scheduled through Friday will happen as planned. Activities for Saturday, Dec. 19, are cancelled.
In the meantime, masks are required to enter the Banks County Rec Center, including for practices and games.
The Dec. 19 to Jan. 2 pause is intended to allow conditions to improve.
“By doing this, we are hoping to give our people the space they need to help slow the communitywide spread we are seeing currently in Banks County,” Whitmire said. “We plan to resume play and begin basketball games on Jan. 4 as they are regularly scheduled.”
A uniform pick-up time for 7- to 14-year-old teams will be announced when uniforms arrive.
