Three northeast Georgia teams from our AccessWDUN coverage area pushed their way into the Georgia High School Association Final 4 last week.
All three -- Buford in Class 6A, Jefferson in Class 4A, Rabun County in Class 2A -- will face tough semifinal opponents. Jefferson and Rabun Couny will have to hit the road for the first time this playoff season.
And once again Jacobs Media will provide action for Buford and Jefferson on our radio stations and live streaming.
In Class 6A, Buford routed Hughes last week behind another lock down defensive effort. It will get considerably more difficult this week when the state's all-time winningest program, Valdosta, heads to Tom Riden Stadium. You can hear the game live on WDUN AM 550 (Click to listen live). The Wildcats (7-4) are led by the often entertaining and sometimes controversial Rush Popst, the former Colquitt County head coach. They knocked off Carrollton last week on the road. The Wolves (11-1) are the winningest program in Georgia in the 21st Century and are looking for a second consecutive finals appearance after capturing the Class 5A crown in 2019. Something may have to give, however. Valdosta is 24-2 in semifinal games all-time. Buford is 20-4 all-time in the semifinals. You may want to call ahead for tickets.
And over on FM 102.9 WDUN (Click to listen live) fans will again be able to tune in to hear Jefferson. This time, the Dragons head to Benedictine near Savannah in the Class 4A semifinals. It is a battle of region champs and top five-ranked teams. Jefferson (13-0) held off a late Carver-Columbus rally last week to advance to its first semifinal since 2016. The Cadets (9-2) are looking for their first finals appearance since winning the Class 2A state title. Something will have to give in this one as well. The Dragons are a perfect 4-0 on the road in 2020 while the Cadets are 3-0 at home this season.
