New trolleys coming to Gainesville

The City of Gainesville recently announced a new trolley system coming to the city.

The trolleys will only be used for special events at first; however, beginning in the spring they will operate for regular lunch routes downtown. Gainesville Community Services Director Phillippa Lewis Moss said that city officials are looking to make the trolleys free and hope that the new transportation will encourage people to visit downtown lunch eateries. New Browns Bridge set to open for travel on Friday

A replacement bridge for the old Browns Bridge on Georgia 369 over Lake Lanier will open to traffic Friday, Dec. 18 after nearly three years of construction.

The new bridge, which has been under construction since January 2018, spans Lake Lanier at the Forsyth/Hall County line. While traffic will move to the bridge beginning Friday, the project is not expected to be complete until April 2021. READ MORE

Pay raise expected for City of Gainesville employees in January

At a Gainesville City Council work session on Thursday, Dec. 10, Gainesville City Manager Bryan Lackey said City of Gainesville employees can expect a four percent pay raise beginning in January.

The raise was originally considered in March, but the idea was halted due to concerns surrounding COVID-19. After city revenues exceeded projections for the year, officials brought the plan back to the table to reward city employees for their work on the frontlines during the pandemic. READ MORE

Doctor: Be smart about COVID at holiday gatherings

As the busy holiday season approaches, health officials are urging people to rethink parties and large family gatherings.

Coronavirus cases spiked after the Fourth of July holiday, Labor Day and now Thanksgiving, and Northeast Georgia Health System Vice President of Medical Education Dr. John Delzell is urging people to take the threat seriously.

Delzell recommends that holiday gatherings only include the family members in your immediate bubble or people you are around all the time. In addition, Delzell is encouraging those who still choose to gather in large groups to take proper precautions such as wearing masks and keeping a safe distance. READ MORE

Hall County pushes back January State Court trials to April

Just days after Hall County court officials decided to cancel jury trials in Superior Court for the month of January, officials made the decision to reschedule State Court trials.

Hall County State Court Jury Trials scheduled for Jan. 25, 2021, at the North Hall Community Center will now be continued until Apr. 12, 2021, while a decision on the Feb. 1, 2021 trial week will be made after the holidays.

The decision to reschedule came after a record-breaking number of COVID-19 hospitalizations at Northeast Georgia Health System facilities. READ MORE
