THOMASTON — Three of the area's four teams still have the opportunity to host the semifinals, and one will be on the road in the semifinals of the Georgia High School Association football playoffs. All, of course, based on winning this week in the quarterfinals.
Per GHSA by-law 4.39, a “universal” coin toss to determine which part of the bracket would be “home” in all classes of the semifinals if the two competing teams are equal seeds AND both schools meet the GHSA requirements for hosting the contest (see Page 66 of Constitution for hosting criteria).
The universal coin toss results established that when like seeds meet, the TOP half of the bracket will be home in the semifinals. This is only for games between equal seeds. In all other cases, the higher-seeded team will host as usual.
If they get past Irwin County this week, No. 1 seed Commerce would host if No. 2 seed Warren County beats No. 1 seed Metter. If Metter wins, the Tigers will be on the road.
No. 1 seed Jefferson is the only team in the area that will be on the road in the semifinals. Of course, the Dragons must get past Carver Columbus this week for a trip to either top-seeded Benedictine or Riverdale in the semifinals.
Buford has a chance to host a semifinal game with a win over Hughes this week, and if second-seeded Valdosta knocks off No. 1 seed Carrollton. If not, the Wolves will travel to Carrollton next week.
Rabun County will be pulling for No. 2 seed Thomasville to beat No. 1 seed Callaway this week to garner a semifinal home game. If Callaway wins, Rabun will get the fun trip to LaGrange next week.
