LOGANVILLE — Georgia IronDawg teammates and Oakwood's Russ Tripp and R. Garry Glenn powered their way to a first-place finish in the Southern Powerlifting Federation's Iron Turkey Bash at Body by George.

Lifting, earlier this month, in the Master's Men's 181-pound, 50-54-year-old division, the 53-year old Tripp wound up breaking the National Record in the class with his third lift, a press of 320 pounds. The 66-year old Glenn weighed in Friday at 196.2 and lifted in the Master's Men's 65-69-year-old, 198-pound class, and broke the Georgia State Record with his opening lift of 275, and re-set it at 290 on his second attempt while falling a bit shy on his third as he could not lockout 305. The 290 is good for third place all-time in that Master's division of the SPF.

"(Meet Director) George (Herring) contacted me several weeks ago, and said he had acquired this meet and asked me if I could get some of my old team back together and come lift with him," Glenn said. "George always puts on a great meet with a lot of world-class lifters. That was true again today. A lot of our team couldn't make it for various reasons, and one had a tough day today after benching 700 pounds and winning a meet just last week, but Russ and I did well. Russ really dug deep for that National Record. I'm very pleased to set the State Record, but a little disappointed at not being able to finish that 305. Russ and I talked for a good while and we decided it had been well over a year since our last competition; so I guess today wasn't too bad."

"We needed this," Herring said, referring to the prior missed camaraderie.

Glenn is a 1972 Honor Graduate of Jefferson High in Jefferson, where he lettered in football and wrestling and later coached middle school football and wrestling for the younger Dragons. He is also a former varsity wrestling coach at Johnson High in Gainesville.
