Girls basketball: Towns wins 2OT thriller in opener; GHS; Buford, Banks all get wins

BLAIRSVILLE — Towns County got a free throw from senior Vanessa Floyd with just under 30 seconds left and the Lady Indians' defense held off several last-second attempts to pull out a 43-42 double-overtime win over rival Union County on Tuesday night in both teams' season openers.

It was nip-and-tuck the entire way as neither team led by more than four points. Union County (0-1) led by one at the end of the first quarter and took a 2-point lead into halftime. Towns County (1-0) rallied to tie the game at the end of the third quarter and into the second overtime.

Towns County was led by Floyd with 15 points. Sophomore Sarah Shook scored 9 points and senior Kennedi Henson added 7 in her return from an ACL injury at the end of last season.

Union County was paced by Ava Hunter, who poured in a game-high 17 points.


GAINESVILLE 50,
LANIER 42

Gainesville overcame a sluggish first quarter to beat Lanier on Tuesday.

The Lady Red Elephants (2-1) trailed 6-4 after the opening period but outscored the Lady Longhorns 29-20 over the second and third quarters to grab the lead. They led 16-13 at halftime.

Lauren Teasley paced Gainesville with 15 points. KeKe Jones added 14 points and Zaria Williams had 10 for the Lady Red Elephants.

Gainesville will be back in action next Tuesday at home against Milton.


BUFORD 57, 
JEFFERSON 54

The second-ranked Lady Wolves (Class 6A) battle past Class 4A No. 2 Jefferson to win the Jackson EMC Tip-off tournament at Jefferson on Tuesday. 

Tournament MVP Ashyia Willis led Buford (3-0) with 13 points, while Blair Wallis turned in 12 points and freshman Ava Grace Watson added 10 points. 

Livi Blackstock paced the Lady Dragons with a game-high 16 points, Allianne Clark scored 11, and Deshona Gaither netted 10 points.

Buford will be back in action on Saturday in the North Georgia Showcase at Buford Arena against North Oconee at 5 p.m.


BANKS COUNTY 44, 
EAST HALL 43

The Lady Leopards (2-1) shot past East Hall in a nail biter on Tuesday at East Hall.

Jacy Ayers led Banks with 20 points. East Hall's Callie Dale scored a team-high 17 points.
