Hall County's Fire Station 1 in the Gillsville area is nearly 50 years old, and it's past time to replace the facility, according to county officials.

On Tuesday, Nov. 17, the county takes the first step on construction of a new station with a groundbreaking ceremony at 3126 Gillsville Highway, about three miles from the current Station 1 on U.S. 129/Athens Highway.

Funding for the $3.3 million project is coming from SPLOST VII proceeds. The new station should be ready for occupancy by fall 2021.

The groundbreaking ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday is not open to the public because of the ongoing pandemic. However, anyone who wants to watch the ceremony can log on to the Hall County website at www.hallcounty.org for a virtual look at the event.
