Free Thanksgiving meal set Nov. 26 at Cornelia Community House

Posted 4:03PM on Sunday 15th November 2020 ( 3 years ago )

For the fourth year, those in the Habersham County area who are hungry or have no one with whom to spend Thanksgiving Day can find a free meal at the Cornelia Community House.

“Due to COVID-19, limited on-site seating will be available outside on a first come, first served basis, weather permitting,” said Bishop Billy Jenkins Jr., an organizer of the event. “This is a project that began several years ago as a community outreach by volunteer-minded public servants. It has evolved this year to a faith-based event.”

Traditional Thanksgiving meals will be served in person between 11:30 a.m. and about 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 26, or until the food runs out.

“We just look forward to the community coming out and taking advantage of getting a hot meal for Thanksgiving,” Jenkins said. “We know we should all be giving thanks for what we are and who we are, so therefore we’re just glad to be able to be here and accommodate people so they get a hot meal. We understand there may be several families or people that are not able to get a good meal on this holiday, so we intend on trying to provide that for them.”

Organizers extended the hours this year to accommodate more people due to limited seating and social distancing.

“This event would not be possible without donations from community-minded sponsors and the volunteers who help us conduct it,” Jenkins said.

Carryout meals will be available from the door nearest the handicapped parking in front of the community house. Signs will be posted. Those picking up should be sure not to block parking spaces or emergency access.

To help with planning, those who need to-go meals are asked to contact one of the organizers listed below by Nov. 24 to reserve a plate.

The Cornelia Community House is located at 601 Wyly St., Cornelia.

“We’re thankful to have the blessing of the City of Cornelia and its support through the use of this beautiful facility,” Jenkins said.

For delivery or other questions, contact Billy Jenkins Jr. at (706) 499-0120 or Sam Negron at (706) 839-8222.
