ELBERTON — If we didn’t already think Rabun County was explosive on offense, the Wildcats gave all of Class 2A something to think about on Friday night.
The Wildcats ran just 34 plays, a season-low, but generated 586 yards and nine touchdowns in a stunning 63-7 win over Elbert County at The Granite Bowl. They had six scoring plays of 34-yards or more for the game.
The 63 points is the most ever given up by the Blue Devils (2-5, 1-1 Region 8-2A) in program history and the 56-point loss is also the biggest in program history.
The win for the Wildcats (8-1, 2-0 Region 8-2A) puts them in a position to clinch their seventh-straight Region 8-2A title. They will close out the regular season next week at home against arch-rival Union County with both teams looking for the title.
Running back Lang Windham had a huge game for Rabun County with 219 yards rushing and scored four touchdowns. Quarterback Gunnar Stockton, the leading passer in Class 2A, added 164 yards on the ground with two scores and threw for 203 yards and 3 touchdowns for the Wildcats.
Adriel Clark, who came in leading Class 2A in receiving, had perhaps his biggest game of the season with four catches for 190 yards and was on the receiving end of all three of Stockton's TD passes.
Windham set the tone quickly racing 92-yards for a touchdown on the second play of the game. Less than a minute later he added a 34-yard scoring run for a 14-0 lead just 93 seconds into the game.
On Rabun’s next possession Clark hauled in a 45-yard TD pass and Windham scored his third touchdown in the opening five minutes on a 17-yard run.
Elbert finally broke through the Wildcats defense with a 30-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 28-7. But Stockton scored on a 20-yard run to make it 35-7 by the end of the first quarter.
Clark caught a pair of third quarter TD passes of 50 and 19 yards.
The Wildcats defense held Elbert County to just 175 total yards and forced five turnovers for the game.
