BLAIRSVILLE — Turnovers doomed Union County Friday night in a 31-10 loss to Elbert County at home.
Five turnovers, including a pair of pick-6 interceptions and a fumble inside the Blue Devils 2, snuffed three potential scoring drives as the Panthers (3-3, 1-1 Region 8-2A) never led.
The Panthers opened the game strong blocking an Elbert punt but a pick-6 on the next play gave the Blue Devils lead. But After falling behind 10-0 at halftime, Union County managed to tie the game at 10 early in the third quarter.
Mason McCombs booted a 29-yard field goal and a 40-yard touchdown pass from Logan Helcher to Noah Underwood after Underwood forced an Elbert turnover with a strip-sack and fumble recovery tied the game. But it was short-lived.
Elbert County (2-4, 1-0 Region 8-2A) reclaimed the third five minutes later after Union’s third interception of the game led to a 12-yard touchdown pass. The Panthers’ second pick-6 pushed it to 24-10 and the Blue Devils sealed with a 50-yard touchdown pass with just over four minutes left.
