BUFORD — Buford staved off elimination in the Class 6A girls softball state playoffs with a tough 3-0 win over River Ridge in Game 3 of their best-of-three series on Friday afternoon at the Buford Softball Complex.

Buford got a RBI single from freshman Tavye Borders in the second and a two-run home run from freshman Mackenzie Pickens, her 9th of the season, in the fifth.

That was more than enough for sophomore pitcher Olivia Duncan, who scattered six hits and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning to preserve the lead and the win.

The Lady Wolves next will travel to South Effingham outside of Savannah in the quarterfinal round.

In Class A Public, Commerce continued its run in the playoffs in impressive style Friday.

The Lady Tigers whipped Trion 8-0 and 12-5 in a second round sweep at home. The series win pushes the Lady Tigers into the quarterfinals, which begin on Tuesday.

But Jefferson's bid to move on playoffs came to end on Friday on the road.

The Lady Dragons fell 7-0 to Heritage-Catoosa in Game 3 of the two teams' Class 4A second round playoff series. The Lady Generals won the series 2-1 and advance to the quarterfinals.

Heritage scored four runs in the second and three more in the sixth while holding Jefferson to just one hit in the game.
