Even as volunteers for the Hall County Toys for Tots program search for warehouse space for donations, they can't afford to slow down on their collection efforts.
Kristi Graham, the Hall County coordinator, was a guest this past week on WDUN's Mornings on Maine Street, and she said the organization needs donated warehouse space to house the thousands of toys donated by the community.
"We have been so fortunate that our landlord has donated space for the last eight years, but he has found a tenant to fill the space that we are in," Graham told show host Bill Maine on Thursday. "We, as true Marines, will adapt and overcome."
Graham said the hope is to find a space measuring 10,000 square feet to accommodate the toy donations. She said that sounds like a big space, but they need it because they serve so many families each year.
"On an average it's close to a thousand families [each year] and around 6,000 children," Graham said. "We're already estimating around 400 applications have been completed and October's not even over yet."
Graham said the national campaign for Toys for Tots actually began Oct. 1, but donation boxes won't show up locally until the week of Thanksgiving. She said they welcome businesses that want to set up boxes for donations.
