A Commerce man who reportedly ran from law enforcement on October 6 was taken into custody last week, but not without a fight.

Tevin Rucker, 28, reportedly kicked a Jackson County Sheriff's deputy in the mouth while deputies attempted to subdue and arrest him, according to Sheriff Janis Mangum.

"They were able to bring a Rapid ID machine to identify him, and during the time they identified him and they were telling him to put his hands behind his back... he resisted," said Mangum. Rucker reportedly kicked the deputy when they were trying to remove him from the vehicle. "He was tased, I think he was tased twice."

Mangum said the arrest occurred a few days after the initial event, which she described as a car chase over a suspicious vehicle. One woman was arrested in that case, but Rucker reportedly fled on foot.

"The black male driver fled and they did not get him, but they identified him and warrants were taken," said Mangum. "We received information about a possible location for Tevin Devon Rucker, so the deputies went to the location."

Mangum said his mother advised that Rucker was not home and declined to allow law enforcement to search for him inside the home. However, deputies had the description of a vehicle he might be in - a Mustang - and one stayed in the area. He eventually saw the Mustang return to that home. That is when the fight broke out.

Rucker faces charges in both incidents, Mangum said, including possession of heroin, fleeing and attempting to elude, criminal damage to property in the second degree, criminal interference of government property, obstruction of an officer - felony, obstruction of officer - misdemeanor, loitering and prowling, giving a false name or date of birth, as well as two probation violations, simple battery on a peace officer and obstruction.

Mangum said the deputy was injured but will be okay.
