The city of Flowery Branch Thursday announced that it is beginning its process for updating its comprehensive plan.

The plan is required by the state to be updated every five years. City officials Thursday said the update is in the preliminary planning stages and they will be holding two public hearings to gather input on the comprehensive plan. The dates for those meetings are expected to be announced later this month.

Paige Hatley, who is helping the city form the plan update, spoke to the city council at Thursday's meeting. She said it's important for the public know that the plan is not an ordinance and does not alter any existing zoning, but is instead an outline of how certain areas of the city should be considered for future zoning.

"We're looking ahead, getting guidance through the comprehensive plan as a guiding policy document," Hatley said. "It's a long-range policy focused on land use, but it's looking down the road 20 years."

Hatley said the plan can provide guidance for both residential and commercial growth in the city as well as transportation and water and sewer needs.

The city provided opportunity for public comment at Thursday's meeting, but no one spoke. The comprehensive plan update is due by June 30, 2021.
