GAINESVILLE — Lakeview Academy (2-1) rolled over Towns County 31-12 to get their second home win of the season on Friday at Lion Stadium.
The Lions (2-1) got off to a fast start, scoring on two of their first three drives to take a 14-0 lead and set the pace against the Indians (2-3).
“It was very important for us to get off to a fast start,” Lakeview coach Lee Shaw said. “Towns County was coming in with a lot of momentum and a lot of belief in what they were doing. Of course, we had some too, but I felt like getting a jump on them was crucial to winning this game tonight.”
Lakeview got on the board thanks to a 22-yard pass from Jesse Whiting to Sky Thellman on their second drive of the game. The defense then forced a three and out, and Ben Puckett punched in a run from nine yards out to extend the lead.
Whiting finished the game 7 for 14 for 84 yards a touchdown and an interception. He also ran the ball for 42 yards and a score. Puckett finished the game with 114 yards on 20 carries and the one touchdown.
Whiting and Puckett ran the read-option for the Lions all night long with great success, however, Shaw sees plenty of room for improvement.
“We’re still a long way off from being really good on offense, but we’re getting better every week,” Shaw said. “Some of these guys are fitting in their positions now and feeling comfortable with it. We’re still finding ways to put points on the board no matter if it’s special teams, defense or offense.”
On defense, the Lions slowed down the Towns County offense for the majority of the game. Kyle Oakes ran for 164 yards on 31 carries and two touchdowns, but the Indians could not get much else going on that side of the ball. The Lions’ defense was all over the field tonight, recovering two fumbles, one for a touchdown, and blocking a punt that led to a 32-yard field goal from Bodie Blackwell.
“We felt like we had to play with relentless effort and gang tackle,” Shaw said. “We’re playing with a lot of heart, playing for Lakeview, and we’re having fun doing it.”
Lakeview (2-1) will travel to Coosa next week, while Towns County (2-3) will have a bye week before starting their region schedule at home against Lincoln County on Oct. 16.
