BLAIRSVILLE — Logan Helcher ran for two touchdowns and threw for one more to lead Union County to a 28-14 win over Pickens on Friday at home.
The Panthers (2-2) never trailed in taking their second straight win after an 0-2 start.
Carson Walker broke a scoreless tie early in the second quarter racing 18-yards for a score and a 7-0 lead. The Dragons answered to tie the game by halftime but Helcher got going in the second half.
Helcher connected with Noah Underwood for a 16-yard TD pass early in the third quarter and then added a 5-yard touchdown run later in the period for a 21-7 lead. That score was set by a Kaston Hemphill interception.
Helcher then repeatedly gashed the Pickens defense on the Panthers' next drive and capped it with an 11-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 28-7 early in the fourth quarter.
Pickens closed the gap to 28-14 and had chances after a pair of Union County turnovers but the Dragons could not cash in as the Panthers defense stood tall down the stretch.
