GAINESVILLE – Members of the Gainesville City Council heard at their work session Thursday morning that an application to annex 5.5-acres into the city to allow for the construction of an extended stay hotel along Crescent Drive near the I-985 southbound exit onto Jesse Jewell Parkway will be withdrawn.
The application of Moez Hasni on behalf of WS Hotels was the first to come before the city since new ordinances governing extended stay hotels were approved in December.
Hasni’s application received a unanimous recommendation for denial when it appeared before the Gainesville Planning and Appeals Board January 14th.
Community and Economic Development Deputy Director Matt Tate said after the work session, “He (Hasni) has since come in and spoken with us about stepping back and looking at potentially different uses for the property, and then he’ll be in touch with us at some point in the future.”
City Attorney Abb Hayes told council members they will need to decide at their voting session on Tuesday an official status for the withdrawal request. “At your meeting you’ll need to consider either a withdrawal with or without prejudice,” Hayes said.
“With or without prejudice” is a status under civil code that governs when the applicant may reapply. In Gainesville the waiting period for applicants given a “With prejudice” status is a minimum of six months.
