Boys basketball: Nicholson leads CHS past WHall; Bluff, Banks win; Commerce, Lumpkin, Branch, LCA lose

GAINESVILLE — Chestatee's Brenton Nicholson added six more 3-pointers to his yearly total. 

Nicholson scored a game-high 22 points -- 18 from 3-point land -- to lead the War Eagles over West Hall, 64-41, on Tuesday at home. 

It was Nicholson's second straight game of five or more 3-pointers and the last 3-of-4 games in double digits. Nicholson was one of three War Eagles in double digits against the Spartans. Jonah Bull scored 18 points and Kyle Bowmar added 14. 

The win keeps the War Eagles (11-12, 5-5 Region 7-4A) in fourth place the region -- a game ahead of White County and three games behind Marist. 

Quincy Holcomb and Canaan Koger had 8 points each to lead West Hall. 


ATHENS CHRISTIAN 86,
COMMERCE 81

The Tigers dropped their sixth straight game, the third by five points or less, and it as their sixth straight Region 8-A loss going back to early December.

Shawn Cunningham paced Commerce (11-11, 1-6 Region 8-A) with 22 points. Matthew Simpson added 19 points and Colin Veal and Ian McConnell chipped in 12 points each.

Commerce next will travel to Athens Academy on Friday.


CHEROKEE BLUFF 74,
FANNIN COUNTY 43

Carlos Marlow scored 13 points and Jason Evrett added 12 points to lead the Bears (14-8, 6-3 Region 7-3A)past Fannin County at home on Tuesday.


GREATER ATLANTA CHRISTIAN 74,
LUMPKIN COUNTY 43

Lumpkin County hung tough for one quarter trailing just 15-6 but the Spartans exploded for a 23-7 second quarter and eventually ran away with a Region 7-3A contest in Dahlonega.

Peyton Polk led Lumpkin County (8-14, 4-6 Region 7-3A) with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Gus Faulkner added 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists and Chandler Pulley had 9 points for the Indians, who have dropped two straight games.


BANKS COUNTY 50,
MONTICELLO 42

Carl Clevelands 22 points and 12 rebounds helped the Leopards snap a two-game skid in the win over Monticello on the road Tuesday. 

Banks County jumped out to a 17-4 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Monticello outpaced the Leopards 19-6 in the second quarter to tie the game, 23-23, at the half. 

The Leopards outscored the Hurricanes, 25-20, in the second half to win the game. 

Garrett Pressley added 9 points, while Dakota Orr had 6. 


DENMARK 76,
FLOWERY BRANCH 40

Judson Burney scored 11 points and Andrew Armstrong added 10 points in the Falcons' loss to Denmark at home on Tuesday. 

The Falcons trailed 35-26 at the half, but Denmark exploded for 26 fourth-quarter points to blow open the Region 7-4A contest.

LCA 70 OT

Despite Trevin Last's 24 points and 19 rebounds and Bo Souther's 21 points, Lanier Christian Academy fell in overtime to Young Americans Christian School on Tuesday.
