A 16-year-old student at North Hall High School has been arrested for having a handgun in his car on campus, the Hall County Sheriff’s Office said Friday in a news release.

Deputies also found a small amount of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, a rifle and a bottle of alcohol during a search of the car.

The teen turned himself in to investigators on Friday night and has been taken to a youth detention center.

The incident began around 9 a.m. Friday when a school official noticed an improperly parked car on campus. The official notified the school resource officer after he saw a handgun in the vehicle.

Neither the student not his parents would consent to a search of the vehicle, according to a news release from the Hall County School District. As a result, deputies impounded the car until a search warrant could be obtained.

The handgun turned out to be BB pistol that looked like an actual firearm.

The student has been suspended pending a disciplinary tribunal. The teen has been charged with possession of a weapon at school, disrupting a public school and possession of marijuana. He is not being named because he is a juvenile offender.

The case remains under investigation by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.
