Banks County wreck claims life of Maysville man

Posted 5:15PM on Thursday 16th January 2020 ( 4 years ago )

A Maysville man died when his minivan left the roadway and overturned south of Homer early Thursday.

Steven Dale Baxter, 66, was driving a 2008 Chrysler Town & Country south on McDonald Circle approaching a left curve when, for unknown reasons, Baxter failed to negotiate the curve about 6:30 a.m., said Cpl. Major Patterson of Georgia State Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville.

The van traveled off the right shoulder of the road in the sharp curve, traveling down an embankment where it overturned onto its top, coming to rest partially submerged in a creek, Patterson said.

When Banks County Fire/EMS personnel arrived, they performed rapid extrication, said Fire/EMS Chief Steve Nichols, but Baxter succumbed to his injuries.

Baxter was pronounced dead at the scene by the Banks County Coroner’s Office.

No other vehicles were involved.

One firefighter received minor injuries, but later was released after medical attention, Nichols said.

The incident was terminated at 11 a.m., Nichols said.

A Banks County Sheriff's Office unit blocks McDonald Circle while crews remove the vehicle involved in Thursday morning's fatal wreck.
