Two Gainesville police officers were officially recognized last week for their "heroic actions" after responding to a local doctor's office last September where a juvenile had gone into cardiac arrest.

Meritorious Service Awards were presented to Charlie Champion and Chase Trammell by Police Chief Jay Parrish at Tuesday's Mayor and City Council meeting.

Champion and Trammell worked with other first responders to provide lifesaving measures, performing CPR on the juvenile and assisting in regaining a pulse, according to a posting on the city's Website.  “The great thing is the child’s alive today and has no side effects from the ordeal …,” Parrish said.

Champion and Trammell were met with a standing ovation and words of appreciation from Mayor Danny Dunagan and council members.

Parrish said it was Trammell’s fifth Meritorious Service Award and Champion’s second, for which they received plaques and certificates.

“Sometimes people wonder if they make a difference in this world – these two men know that seven people are alive because of them,” he said.
