Northeast Georgia Medical Center has now treated over 10,000 patients through the use of robotic surgery, otherwise known as the da Vinci Surgical System.
Patients have options for treatment in many areas through this program, including general surgery.
NGMC currently houses four robotic systems between their two Gainesville and Braselton locations, with a fifth robot on its way. A team of 30 specially trained surgeons works to operate the systems.
“Patients typically benefit tremendously from robotic surgery when compared to traditional procedures which often require larger, open incisions,” says Andrew Green, MD, a gynecologic oncologist with Northeast Georgia Physicians Group and medical director of the Robotic Surgical Program at NGMC. “Common advantages include smaller incisions and less blood loss, which can also decrease the need for narcotic pain medicine. These benefits often translate to a shorter hospital stay and, in general, a quicker return to normal activities for our patients.”
The systems allow surgeons to perform operatons through tiny incisions and in some cases with limited scarring.
