The Longstreet Society will hold a memorial service and open house Sunday, January 5 in Gainesville to honor their namesake, Lt. General James Longstreet.

The service will be at Alta Vista Cemetery on Jesse Jewel Parkway and the open house will be held immediately after at the Piedmont Hotel on Maple Street, the society's headquarters. The service is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. and will include historical readings and live music, and hot chocolate and snacks will be served at the open house.

Longstreet fought in the Civil War as second in command to General Robert E. Lee and later became a prominent business man in Gainesville from the late 1800's until his death in 1904. The Longstreet Society was formed in 1994 in his honor.

More information on the service can be found on the society's website.
