Passengers boarding the Amtrak Crescent in Gainesville and elsewhere along the New York City-New Orleans route will soon no longer be able to experience dining car service.
Dining cars are being removed from the Crescent, Cardinal, City of New Orleans, and Silver Meteor starting Oct. 1 and the Silver Star next year. The Washington Post reports its a move designed to save money and attract a more diverse traveler demographic, such as millennials.
While "cooked to order" meals will become a thing of the past, boxed meals will be available, but, in the beginning, only to Sleeping Car riders. The service may be available to other riders, as well, at some future date, according to Amtrak officials.

The Crescent stops twice-a-day in Gainesville (once in the morning and once in the evening) as well as Toccoa and Atlanta.
