Original story:
While the incident remains under investigation, Gainesville police confirm one person was wounded in an officer-involved shooting Friday afternoon near Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
Cpl. Jessica Van, the Communications Liaison Officer with the Gainesville Police Department, said officers were initially dispatched to a location on Jesse Jewell Parkway at Wisteria Drive to investigate a gunman that was in the area.
At some point shots were exchanged, but Van did not have details on how the incident unfolded. She confirmed one suspect was injured.
"We do know that there is a male subject that is being treated," Van said. She did not release information on the extent of the man's injuries.
Van confirmed two officers were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for evaluation.
"The officers did not have any apparent injuries," Van said.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called to take over the investigation, and Van said it would likely be sometime Saturday before agents released further information.
The streets in the impacted area remained closed for several hours for the investigation, and their was a brief lockdown at some Medical Center facilities.
"We were able to inform employees who were in the Northeast Georgia Physicians Group Surgical Associates Office to just lock the exterior doors...just to keep themselves safe," said Sean Couch, NGMC Director of Public Relations. "We also started the lockdown of some exterior doors at the hospital itself just in case there was anyone that approached the facility, but thankfully the threat was neutralized quickly."
While Van was unable to offer specific details on the incident, she did express the police department's appreciation for the community response.
"At this time, we just want to thank everybody for coming together in the community and for [their] support and prayers," Van said. "It's unfortunate that these situations do occur."
