JEFFERSON — East Jackson is 2-0 for the first in a decade.
The Eagles strolled to a 30-7 win over Oglethorpe County at Eagle Stadium Friday night on the back of its defense, and it's the first time East Jackson has started the season 2-0 since 2009.
The Eagle defense snagged two pick-sixes, including the first score of the game and forced a safety late in the game.
"When you score on defense, usually great things are going to happen and that held true tonight," East Jackson coach Cameron Pettus said.
As for the offense, not much was needed. The Eagles put up only 252 yards of total offense, 74 yards passing and 178 rushing yards in the win.
East Jackson's RJ White started the Eagles scoring when he snatched a Patriot pass out of the air and returned it 30 yards for the first score of the game.
East Jackson scored two more times in the first quarter off a Greg Huggs touchdown pass to Shawn Cunningham and a Kahlil Wakins interception return for a score, giving the Eagles a 21-0 lead at the end of the first.
Rasheen Willis scored the Patriots only touchdown on a 31-yard run with 5:11 to go in the second quarter.
Late in the third quarter, Huggs nailed Caleb Adair on a 10-yard scoring strike and late in the fourth quarter, Justin Haynes forced the safety.
"I thought our effort was great, but we still have a long way to go," Pettus said. "I'm very proud of our guys, and I love them to death and thought they played hard."
East Jackson will try to stay perfect on the young season when they play host to Banks County Friday. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
"They're going to be tough," Pettus said. "They play good defense, so we've got our work cut out for us. I think it's going to be a battle."
