As Week 2 of the high school football season gets underway on Friday, several northeast Georgia teams are looking to get into the win column while others will look to continue their hot starts.
The marquee matchup of the night could well be south of Mundy’s Mill Road where West Hall (0-1) and Johnson (1-0) resume their feud in ‘The Battle of Oakwood’ at Spartans Field. West Hall has owned the series of late winning six straight. But the Knights bring in new coach Stan Luttrell, who was part of a Johnson staff in 2003 that ended a seven-game winless streak to the Spartans that season.
Another interesting showdown will be in Coal Mountain. Despite winning a state title in 2012 and currently residing as the state’s third-most winningest program, Gainesville has not started a season 2-0 since 2009. The Red Elephants (1-0) travel to North Forsyth (0-1) on Friday against one of just three teams they have never beaten in five or more tries.
Jackson County, behind legendary and new coach Rich McWhorter, heads to The Brickyard to take on North Hall (1-0) in a matchup of two of the area’s best defenses. The Panthers (1-0) are looking to mirror a rebuild similar to the Trojans’ back in the early 2000s.
