Even though apparent vandals have made a mess of a new corn maze attraction in Dawson County, the owners plan to move ahead with the opening of the maze next month.

According to a report on 11 Alive News in Atlanta, vandals sprayed some sort of chemical across a swath of Papa Pat's Corn Maze on Highway 53 East. The maze is located at the former site of Uncle Shuck's Corn Maze, which moved to a different location after 17 season at the site. This would be the first year of operation for Papa Pat's.

Chris Gober, one of the owner/operators, told the television station they began to notice some spots on the corn on Aug. 18 as they were cutting the maze. By the next day, large areas of the field were dead.

Gober said the Dawson County Sheriff's Office is investigating. In addition, the Gobers contacted the county extension agent to conduct testing on the plants and the soil to determine what might have been used to destroy part of the plants.

The Gober family also told the television station they noticed some foot tracks in the damaged area of the corn field.

Gober said despite the damage, the family will open the attraction on Sept. 20, dividing the corn field into two different mazes, bypassing the damaged plants.
