An investigation is underway into the embezzlement of $150,000 from a historic Gainesville church.

The Gainesville Police Department confirmed Wednesday morning investigators are in the process of interviewing suspects in the theft from Central Baptist Church at 785 Main Street in Gainesville.

According to a police department spokesman, the theft occurred between 2015 and 2018.

Mike Taylor, the current senior pastor of the church, issued an email statement Wednesday afternoon

"Central Baptist Church recently completed an internal review of our financial records and turned the results over to law enforcement officials. Because it is now a police investigation, we will have no further comment."

Police investigators have not publicly identified the suspects in the case.
