The union representing striking AT&T workers – including some in Gainesville – said Wednesday morning the workers were returning to work, but its statement made no mention of a new agreement.
Communications Workers of America told AT&T that it is ending the unfair labor practice strike at 1 p.m. today, when some 20,000 workers are set to go back to their jobs, according to a statement on the union’s website.
“The strike is over, effective immediately,” the statement read.
In a note to the affected employees, union vice president Richard F. Honeycutt praised the workers for their commitment.
“The company saw how seriously you and your members took the protest and that you would not stop until they bargained with us in good faith,” he wrote. “Your actions will never be forgotten by us or by your CWA brothers and sisters across the country.
The strike began Saturday morning, when technicians, customer service representatives and others at the telecommunications company walked off the job. The strike affected AT&T’s residential and business networks in nine southeastern states, including Georgia, where about 4,000 workers were on strike.
Workers from CWA Local 3203 began picketing at the AT&T office at 500 Broad Street in Gainesville on Saturday morning, and they were back every morning since.
