Opening arguments began Tuesday in a Dothan, Alabama courtroom in the trial of a Hall County woman in the death of her infant son.
Amanda Gail Oakes, 36, is charged with manslaughter, abuse of a corpse and felony chemical endangerment of a child in the death of 6-month-old Curtis James Oakes. The baby's body was discovered in a hotel room freezer last summer. The baby's father, Carlton James Mathis, 28, of Gainesville, is charged with the murder of the infant.
The Dothan Eagle reported that prosecutors told the court Oakes left the baby with Mathis while she was on a "drug run" from Georgia to Alabama.
The newspaper said Oakes picked up her daughter in Hall County and then made drug drop-offs as they returned to Alabama, even though she knew the baby had died.
Proscutors also told the court forensic testing found methamphetamine the infant’s blood.
The prosecution also began calling witnesses Tuesday.
Testimony in the case continues Wednesday.
