The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has designated more than $1.6 million for improvements at one of the busiest intersections in Gainesville.

GDOT awarded the contract to CMES, Inc. of Norcross for the work at the intersection of Jesse Jewell Parkway at John Morrow and Queen City Parkways (SR 60).

Among the improvements to intersection will be the installation of a video detection system.

Motorists in the area can expect to see tree removal, clearing of right of way, traffic sign installation and other work going on for the duration of the project. GDOT said the work should be finished by October 31, 2020.

The contract for the Gainesville project is one of 13 construction contracts for statewide transportation projects totaling $37.9 million. The projects included were advertised on June 21, bids were received by July 19 and contracts were awarded to the lowest qualified bidders on August 2.
