Despite a recent hip surgery, former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn are planning to help build homes for Habitat for Humanity for the 36th consecutive year.
The AJC reported the Carters will be in Nashville from Oct. 6-11 to help with the construction of 21 homes. Since 1984, the couple has helped build more than 4,300 homes in 14 different countries.
“There have been many times when people have tried to count President Carter out, and they have never been right,” Bryan Thomas, a spokesperson for Habitat for Humanity International told the AJC.
Due to recent growth of the city, Nashville’s housing costs have gone up. The city has brought in more jobs, more opportunities, but less affordable housing for low-income households, the news outlet reported.
Mayor David Briley announced a housing initiative called Under One Roof 2029. The initiative aims for an investment of $750 million over the course of the next 10 years in affordable housing in Nashville; $500 million will come from the city, while the remaining $250 million will come from the private sector. The mayor expects to create at least 10,000 new housing units.
