A fire on an island in Lake Lanier that lit up the nighttime sky one day last week was not as bad as it may have looked, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. But, the big concern is the amount of trash officials found on Three Sisters Island.
Several pictures of the burning island were posted on social media the night that the fire occurred.
The Corps listed no cause for the fire.
"We checked on the island today that burned within the past few days and it didn't look too bad," according to a posting on the Corps' Lake Lanier Facebook page Friday. "It'll grow back lush and green next spring. A few danger trees, lots of burned-out stump holes and 98% of the ground was scorched or burned, but nothing of concern. What is concerning is the amount of garbage we found."
Trash and garbage left on the lake's islands is nothing new, according to frequent postings on social media pages, where people regularly complain about what they find on the islands they visit.
