A former Hall County deputy was arrested this week for falsely accusing another deputy of trying to sexually assault her.

Margaret Brumbelow, 30, of Lula was charged with making false statements. In July, she reported that the alleged attack happened while she was off duty. The ensuing investigation determined the allegation was false.

Brumbelow was fired from her job on Monday, shortly before she was arrested at her home. She was booked into the Hall County Jail and released later that day after posting a $5,700 bond.

“Incidents like these are very difficult for law enforcement agencies, but they must be addressed when they occur,” Sheriff Gerald Couch said. “We take reports of crime seriously, and members of our agency, assisted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, diligently investigated this allegation. While I’m thankful no attempted assault occurred, the falsehood could not be overlooked. Our department is full of excellent deputies and professionals. Cases like these are the exception.”

Brumbelow had worked for the Sheriff’s Office since July 17, 2016. Most recently, she was a deputy in the Jail Division transport unit.

Officials are continuing to investigate the case.
