A 16-year-old student died at Elite Scholars Academy Tuesday night while she was outside in 97-degree temperatures.
CBS46 revealed the student's identity as Imani Bell. Bell was a basketball player and was outside conditioning around the time she fell ill.
The student was found unresponsive, but she stopped breathing and suffered cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital, firefighters said.
It was 97 degrees at the time Bell was conditioning outside, but with the heat index it felt like temperatures more than 100 degrees.
"I thought it was like a regular day. I didn't know what happened and I didn't know it would be like this," Leani Hernandez, a student said to CBS46 in an interview.
The Clayton County school district is working toward more details on the incident, the district said. Grief counselors were available to students on Wednesday.
