United, Orlando City battle for spot in U.S. Open Cup finals

ATLANTA — Atlanta United returns to action Tuesday when it travels to face Orlando City SC in the semifinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Exploria Stadium.

Atlanta opened the 2019 U.S. Open Cup by defeating Charleston Battery 3-1 on June 13 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in the Fourth Round. Romario Williams scored in the 79th minute to send the match into extra time, where substitutes Justin Meram and Brandon Vazquez connected twice with Vazquez scoring the game-winner in the 110th minute and adding his second goal in the 121st minute.

Atlanta defeated Columbus Crew SC 3-2 on the road in the Round of 16 on June 18. Vazquez scored his second consecutive brace in Open Cup play and Miles Robinson added his first goal of the competition to send Atlanta to the quarterfinals for the first time in club history.

Atlanta then topped Saint Louis FC 2-0 on July 10 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. In his club debut, Emerson Hyndman setup Pity Martinez for what would ultimately be the game-winner in the 52nd minute. Josef Martinez later added a goal from the penalty spot in stoppage time to send Atlanta through to the semifinals.

Orlando defeated Memphis 901 FC 3-1 in the Fourth Round in Memphis at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The club then edged New England Revolution 2-1 on June 19 at home as all three goals were scored in extra time. Benji Michel and Tesho Akindele scored in the 96th and 101st minutes, respectively, to put Orlando in front before Justin Rennicks pulled one back for the Revolution. Orlando again took the match into extra time against New York City FC in the quarterfinals at Exploria Stadium on July 10. Chris Mueller scored in the 61st minute to put the Lions ahead, but Maxi Moralez equalized in the 96th minute. Neither side scored in extra time and the match went into penalty kicks where Orlando ultimately won the shootout 5-4.
