Lanier Canoe and Kayak paddler helps set new sprint canoe national record

The American sprint canoe duo of Edward Surles (Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club) and Jonathan Grady (Gig Harbor Canoe & Kayak Racing Team) set a new Junior Men’s American record Friday.

It happened during their Final B 1,000-meter race at the International Canoe Federation Junior and Under-23 World Championships in Pitești, Romania.

Their 5th-place performance comes after their 2nd-place finish n their heat race for the Junior Men.

The time for their new record was 3:56.53. They are now ranked 14th in the World in the Junior (under-18) division.

Surles, 17, a senior at North Hall High School, will be arriving with the Team USA contingent - which includes brother Andrew competing in the kayaking events at these same World Championships - at Lake Lanier in time to compete with the LCKC team at the American Canoe Association NationalsChampionships beginning on Wednesday.
