Female-led theft ring halted by Jackson County Sheriff's Office

Three Jefferson women and a Jefferson man face several felony charges for their alleged part in a multi-county theft ring responsible for stolen trailers, four-wheelers and tools.

Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum stated in a press release issued Thursday night Alayne Massey, 37, and Heather Elaine Karoff, 41, were arrested in July, while Angela Jones, 26, and Harley Jones, 26, were arrested Thursday,  August 1. All of the suspects are from Jefferson.

Massey and Karoff are believed to be responsible for 10 or more trailer thefts in Jackson County, Commerce, Jefferson and Madison County.

At this time, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has recovered four trailers, a four-wheeler, a handgun and several tools.

The sheriff’s office has charged Massey with four-counts of felony theft by taking, two-counts of misdemeanor theft by taking and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Karoff was charged with three-counts of felony theft by taking, felony theft by receiving and two-counts of misdemeanor theft by taking.

Both women are being charged by the Jefferson Police Department and the Commerce Police Department with one-count of felony theft by taking; they also face several charges in Madison County, Mangum said.

Meanwhile, Angela Jones and Harley Jones face charges from Jackson and Clarke counties.
