Candidate for Gwinnett County Commission wants governor to remove incumbent from office

Posted 4:00AM on Thursday 25th July 2019 ( 4 years ago )

A Democrat running for the seat held by Gwinnett County Commissioner Republican Tommy Hunter has asked Governor Kemp to remove Hunter from office.

Derrick Wilson is challenging Hunter, who has come under fire for perceived racial comments made about Congressman John Lewis. Hunter has also filed a $5 million lawsuit against the county for what he calls violating his right to free speech.

The Gwinnett Daily Post reports Wilson request to remove Hunter may be an uphill climb, since a Georgia governor removing someone from office is not only rare, but usually is done if an office holder is indicted or found guilty of a crime.

Gwinnett Commission District 4 stretches from Stone Mountain to Braselton.
