Gwinnett County inmates called heroes after daring rescue

Gwinnett Sheriff deputies credit quick thinking of three inmates with saving the life of a suicidal inmate.

According to Gwinnett County Deputy Shannon Volkodov, the three inmates in the County Detention Center jumped into action when another inmate attempted suicide by hanging from a railing.

"Once the inmate slid through the rails, attempting to kill himself, the inmates and Deputy Gracia were able to hold his body weight up and get him untied," Volkadov said. "They then lowered him to the floor."

Volkodov said the inmate had to be restrained and was put under medical observation.

The three inmates were given a special care package from the sheriff's office of items that are useful during time in lock-up.
