Two people were seriously injured and the road shut down for more than two hours Wednesday afternoon when a tractor-trailer and a car collided west of Gainesville.
The State Patrol's Joshua Hedden says the wreck happened about 1:00 near Hidden Hills Drive.
The 18-wheeler, driven by Vernon Rico Shoals, 25, Jonesboro, was headed westbound on Browns Bridge Road when it crossed into the oncoming lane while trying to avoid traffic that had stopped in the road, Hedden said.
The rig then struck the "front passenger's side" of an eastbound car driven by Rachel Victoria Crust, 22, Alpharetta. Hedden added that the impact caused the truck's cargo to topple into the roadway.
Crust and one of her four passengers, Cheryl Renee Cheatham, 38, Marietta, who was partially ejected from the car, were seriously injured. Hedden said three other passengers suffered minor injuries. One was from Marietta, another from Alpharetta and the third from Atlanta.
Shoals was charged with failure to maintain lane.
Hedden said Browns Bridge Road was "shut down" for two-and-a-half hours.
