The GBI crime lab plans to begin work Monday identifying human remains found in a culvert in Gainesville Friday around 5:30p.m.
Police Chief Jay Parrish said it's too soon to tell the gender of the individual found by a person walking by a dry river bed near Browns Bridge Road and Fincher Drive, but right now they do suspect foul play.
Police Chief Jay Parrish said it's too soon to tell the gender of the individual found by a person walking by a dry river bed near Browns Bridge Road and Fincher Drive, but right now they do suspect foul play.
"We most likely think that it's homicidal in nature just because the body was buried at that location and not laying out on the ground," Parrish explained. He believes much of the evidence probably washed away over time during periods of rain that flood the culvert.
Parrish said his officers worked with an anthropologist to dig deeper at the site and found additional bones that were turned over to the GBI. A pathologist plans to begin examining the remains Monday.
Multiple agencies reached out to his department with missing persons cases and Parrish said he hopes a DNA profile will help identify the remains and offer some leads in the case.
Anyone with information can contact the police department at (770) 534-5251.
