An agreement that would see Hall County take on the city of Gainesville's recyclable waste will be on the county commission's consent agenda Thursday.
The Gainesville City Council approved their end of the intergovernmental agreement in June. Hall County Public Works Director Ken Rearden said the two governments have been discussing the agreements some time.
"(Gainesville) has been bringing (recyclables) to Athens," Rearden said. "We worked with Gainesville, told them we would accept them if the commission and their council would approve it and their council approved it about three weeks ago."
One condition to the agreement is the city will no longer be able to send recyclable glass. Rearden said the county's recycling facility cannot handle glass at this time.
"We have a way to sort it, but the glass tears up the conveyer belts," Rearden said.
County commissioners placed the agreement on Thursday's consent agenda. If approved, Rearden said Gainesville will wait until August 1 to being sending recyclables to the county to allow city residents time to stop sending glass items.
