A 32-year-old Gainesville woman faces a series of new charges following a Monday evening crash that resulted in injuries to three people.
Rianne Rider was charged Tuesday afternoon with two counts of serious injury by vehicle and one count of obstruction for attempting to escape custody while she was receiving treatment at the hospital.
“From time to time we run into that situation,” said police Sgt. Justin Martin said of the escape attempt. “Luckily because we run into that occasionally, we were prepared for it. Hospital security is prepared for it and we were able to clamp down on that pretty quickly.”
Rider had previously been charged with driving under the influence and failure to maintain lane.
Gainesville Police Department investigators said Rider was traveling northbound on Thompson Bridge Road in a Cadillac Escalade and crossed into the southbound lanes north of the Edgewater apartment complex, hitting a Ford Expedition head-on.
The driver of the Expedition, Gabriel Orozco Suarez, 53, of Gainesville, received serious but nonlife threatening injuries in the crash and was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, according to police. A passenger in Suarez' vehicle, Lisandro Hernandez, 37, of Gainesville, also received serious but nonlife threatening injuries. Another passenger in the Expedition, Cesar Martinez of Gainesville, was hurt, but police said his injuries were minor.
A third vehicle, a red Jeep Cherokee driven by Christopher Mundy, 57, of Gainesville, was traveling southbound and became involved in the collision after the initial impact. Mr. Mundy was not injured in the crash.
The accident happened about 6:26 p.m. Southbound traffic was blocked for a time as the accident was cleared.
