Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland has released preliminary details of a car chase that ended in a crash in Hart County Monday afternoon.
The Hart County Sheriff’s Office received a call that Anderson County, S.C., was chasing a white Ford SUV stolen in Anderson County.
As Anderson County continued the chase on U.S. 29 crossing into Georgia, a Hart County deputy deployed a stop stick on the Georgia side of the Savannah River, deflating one of the tires on the fleeing SUV.
Despite that, the pursuit continued at speeds nearing 100 mph, officials said.
The fleeing vehicle then veered into oncoming traffic, striking a pickup truck head-on near the intersection of Elrod Ferry Road, according to Cleveland.
Cleveland said he immediately requested EMS and assisted Anderson County officers in arresting the driver of the fleeing vehicle.
Cleveland identified the driver of the fleeing vehicle as Collin Taylor Bryant, 23.
The Georgia State Patrol was called to investigate the wreck.
Bryant initially was charged with driving under the influence, driving on a suspended license, failure to maintain lane, driving on the wrong side of the road, and possession of methamphetamine, according to Cleveland.
Additional charges are pending against Bryant in Hart County and in South Carolina, according to Cleveland.
Bryant also had three passengers, according to South Carolina authorities.
Additional details will be forthcoming, likely on Tuesday.
Bryant is being held in the Hart County Jail pending extradition proceedings.
