An abandoned baby found in a wooded area on the south end of Forsyth County was wrapped in a plastic shopping bag, but is doing well thanks to an alert family that heard her crying.
"It is without a doubt a divine intervention this child was found," said Forsyth County Sheriff Ron Freeman at a Friday morning press conference. "Had it not been for those observant folks who were our citizens who called 911, we would be having a much different conversation today."
Freeman said a family who lives on Daves Creek Road heard a baby crying as they were unpacking their vehicle as they returned home from a trip. When they investigated, they found the baby and called 911.
Deputies arrived just after 10 p.m. Thursday and began first aid, and immediately called emergency officials to the scene. The baby was transported to a local hospital where she was last reported in stable condition.
Freeman said the baby is either white or Hispanic and was full term.
"There are indications the child had very recently been born," Freeman said. He did not know if the baby had been born in the woods or if she was born elsewhere and dropped at the location where she was found.
The staff at the hospital gave the baby a temporary name after she was handed over to them by emergency responders. Instead of Baby Jane Doe, they're calling her India.
"They all feel like it's one of theirs...they wanted her to have a name," Freeman said.
The sheriff said Baby India will be discharged from the hospital and into the custody of the Department of Family and Children's Services (DFCS).
Right now, investigators are are trying to find the infant's mother. They are asking that anyone who knows a woman who was in the late stages of pregnancy and might have given birth to contact the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office at 770-781- 3087. Sheriff Freeman said tipsters may remain anonymous.
